RECO Registration Renewal in Ontario: The Two-Year Clock Nobody Watches Until It's Late

Your registration expires on a date you have not looked at in two years. RECO does not chase you. Miss it and you are not an agent that morning.

Renewal is not hard. It is just unforgiving about timing.

What the two-year cycle actually requires

  • Continuing education, completed before you can renew. Which courses depends on where you are in your career - the first renewal after registering is not the same as the ones that follow.

  • The renewal application and fee, filed through your MyWeb account at myweb.reco.on.ca.

  • Current professional liability insurance. No insurance, no renewal - and the insurance deadline is its own date, not your renewal date.

The part that costs people their season

Registration does not quietly lapse into a grace period. When it expires you cannot trade. Deals in flight do not care that the paperwork was almost done - representation has to move, and a brokerage cannot pay a terminated registrant.

Reinstating is worse than renewing: more forms, more money, and time you do not have. Agents who miss it lose weeks, not days.

What to do, and when

  • 90 days out: check your expiry date in MyWeb. Write it somewhere that nags you.

  • 60 days out: finish the education. Do not leave it to the last week - completions take time to post to your record.

  • 30 days out: file the renewal and pay. Confirm the status flips in MyWeb; a submitted application is not a renewed registration.

  • Any time: keep your insurance current, separately.

What a Broker of Record watches

At this brokerage the renewal dates sit on my desk, and reminders go out well before anyone is at risk - not because agents are careless, but because a two-year clock is exactly the kind of date a busy person misses. The responsibility is still yours. The safety net is ours.

Quick answers

How often do Ontario real estate agents renew with RECO?

Every two years. Your specific expiry date is in your MyWeb account - it is not the same date for everyone.

What happens if my RECO registration expires?

You cannot trade in real estate. Your listings and clients have to be handled by someone who can, and reinstatement costs more time and money than renewing on time.

Do I need continuing education to renew?

Yes. The required courses depend on where you are in your career, and they must be complete before the renewal can go through.

Is insurance part of renewal?

Professional liability insurance is mandatory and runs on its own schedule. Being current on one does not mean you are current on the other.
